Sorority Row
Sorority Row.
Bella. Guess. Jani. Left to right. Bella next to Heighten, Jani on the end of the shed row. Guess in the middle.
Bella: An ex-racer with a horribly swollen left foreknee that doesn't seem to give her any trouble at all. Had a terrible back when she got here, 'til Dr. Wood performed his magic - now she's just fine. Bella's the horse in our logo. She's the one on the right, without the hat. She's just as sweet as the day is long. A nice bay color without a spot of white anywhere on her cute body. Huge, soft eyes. Loves to be loved. Turns into a dervish when food is in the offing. Absolutely the fastest horse on the ranch, big ol' swollen left foreknee or not. She must've been a sprinter.
Guess: The Queen Bee. My Sweet Babboo. She's a big-boned T-bred who's the perfect picture of her breed. Bee-you-ti-ful face. Very, very expressive eyes. Watch 'em - they'll tell you if she's happy or not. She's very obviously an alpha mare who likes to - has to - run the show. I'm in love with her. And she with me. She has water containers all over - she's a water baby. I can always tell when she's coming into heat because she splashes the water out of all of 'em. I can hear her splashing around in her big tank from inside the house. "Uh-oh, Guess is coming into heat again." The Boss Lady.
Jani: A mild-mannered middle-aged Quarter horse with a slight case of ringbone in her right forehoof. She used to live in the barn next to Maui until Tarzan had to take up temporary residence there due to his eye infection. I moved her into the end stall next to Guess - with a certain amount of trepidation as to whether Guess would accept her or try to terrorize her. A little to my surprise, they're getting along quite famously. They stand next to each other & sleep during the night. I even saw them scratching each other's back the other day. Jani loves her food, too.
Each of the girls' stalls is a little oversized - they each measure 18'x40' & they love to tear around sometimes - all three of 'em - & I wonder what started that. And, like I said, it's gotten all pretty lovey-dovey between them - until the food comes out. Then it's every girl for herself - ears pinned, fencing banged into, hooves being tossed around, teeth bared - you'd think they hated each other or something. As soon as the food is distributed, it's the peaceful kingdom (or queendom) once again.
When one of 'em gets turned out, the others get all antsy & start yelling & screaming lke the girl's being taken away forever. Even though we do it nearly every day of our lives.
And there most certainly is something about Ted-d-d, standing down there in his house in the round pen. Because as soon as I take the halter off, each of 'em always makes a beeline right down to that corner. Pisses Heighten off no end - he thinks it's his harem. As a matter of fact, when I turn Heighten out, HE makes a beeline down to that corner & just kicks & bellers at Ted-d-d until I yell at him to knock it off. Like I said, must be something about ol' Ted.
I give the three girls a pocketful of treats every night before Mikey & I pack it in around 7 PM. I used to have a little concern about distributing the treats - remember, the whole food thing - I'd worry that they'd get all jealous & cause a ruckus. Doesn't really happen, though. I go from one to the other & none of 'em ever grabs - which can get one an inadvertent nip on the hand. Just three sets of soft lips taking each treat like the lady she is. Of course, there are never enough treats & they stand there looking like they've just lost their best friend when I finally run out & have to walk away. Good little actresses.
Bella - the beautiful one. Guess - the Queen Bee. Jani - steady as she goes.
I'm really glad they found one another. Because it's always been pretty clear they could do with some female company. We just never found the right combination before. Now I think we have. At least that's what they tell me.
