ok so here is number two mare who is poss in foal have to have a second vet check redone first vet check said she was to sloppy to say yes or no from so many babies OK, without going into to many gross details. Why did the vet say they could not tell she was pregnant. Just what did they mean by sloppy? I thought they could palpate the mass in the horn, or if she is far enough along, they should have been able to feel the foal.

Usually 'sloppy' refers to the state of the mares uterus. Too sloppy usually means it is distorted, out of 'shape', long, and set down way low into the abdomin. I'd have to talk to the vet to be certian which it is in the case, but usually if they can't tell during a palp because of the uterus being sloppy it means that the uterus is down into the abdomin to far for a good 'feel'. That's what I was told, pretty simple and I'm sure there's more to it, but the vet was trying to make it as simple as he could so that I could understand what he was talking about.
mta: I was told this usually happens (if it does) after multiple pregnancies.

Why not just have an ultrasound done on the mare?

Why not just have an ultrasound done on the mare? Sometimes its the same thing... You can only go in so far or jeapardize (even more) the mare's health. It's up to the vet whether they feel it's safe to do on a mare with a 'sloppy' uterus. Mine would not do it. Now that that's settled. Any guesses on what the mare will have and when? That is what the thread is about afterall.

at the time that the palp was done my vet does not carry an ultrasound machie so we had to save up extra money to take her to davis.

Why not just have an ultrasound done on the mare? The mare is too far along to be ultrasounded.
