OK where do I begin...my head is about to explode.
Someone that boards here picked up this mare for $40 after the Woodburn auction. The mare actually failed to bring any bids at all at the actual sale. She is a 1986 registered AQHA mare.
This boarder (who I shall just say I do not approve of the ethics of) put her on Dreamhorse and offered her for just! $700 with a breeding to her stallion (who I will reserve comment about the quality of).
This poor old mare has neurological issues and a weak hind end. She was dumped by a woman who had her for a lesson horse for EIGHT YEARS. She is sweet as pie. She might have some time left as a companion horse. She does NOT have any business carrying a foal. EVER. She has not been bred, fortunately.
OK, so the other day I notice the mare is breathing very hard standing in her stall. I call the boarder's house. Her mother says "oh yeah, I was there, I saw that, I was going to make her a mash." I observe that she does not need a mash, she needs A VET. NOW. Boarder allegedly calls the vet who allegedly says it can wait until morning (mare breathing hard, not eating, wtf?) Anyway, morning comes and it's 11 AM and still no vet. So I call Boarder AGAIN and say HEY you need to call the vet NOW. She says she will come and pick up the (wobbly, non-eating) mare and haul her to the vet. (To save $30, you see). She actually did finally do that and now the mare has had antibiotics but the vet says she needs to be outside where she can breathe better. We have no facilities here to keep a horse outside. Boarder will not take her home even though she has her own farm.
Boarder finally said she will give the horse away today. For the love of God, if you live reasonably near Portland and have a turnout with shelter for this poor old mare, please come and get her. I can shoot you some hay money on Monday. She has a respiratory infection and I will ensure her meds go with her. I honestly do not think she has a lot of time left, but she is very sweet and I would love it if she got a few months of carrots and love before she had to go.
