Monday, April 6th... Because of a lady named Judy Ann Smith who lives in Oakland, we are naming him Smitty. That depressing feed lot in Wilton. More doomed horses than I have ever seen before. Surreal. Quiet. When strange horses are crowded together on my ranch, there is a dominance dance. Fights. When strange horses are crowded together at a feed lot, there is quiet.
Judy Ann Smith gave me $500.00 to save a life. This guy came right up. Said hello. Under his lip there is a racing tattoo, and the first letter is D. Which means he was born in 2000. Horse killer Manny Phelps says he came from a home in foreclosure. The home sold their 11 horses to horse killer Wade Giles for $100.00 each. Some have already been resold to Canadian slaughter. A black and white colt who was apparently the most beautiful horse Manny Phelps has ever seen, was resold to a family in Mexico. They saved the 9 year gelding for me. My kind of horse. A racing tattoo, and neglected.
He was priced at 40 cents a pound, which came to $320.00. $110.00 for transportation. You can take a look at Smitty below on Top Left. He dove into his tub of Equine Senior like I dive into creamy chocolate cake made by Hannah. Never looked up until his plate was clean.
Also at the feed lot in Wilton there was another black and white colt, and he tried his best to fit into my pocket. A little guy who might be a yearling, or newly turned 2. Sweeter than creamy chocolate cake made by Hannah. His feet trimmed within the last few days. A braided forelock, and pink is really not his color. Easy to see he had just been bathed. I asked horse killer Manny Phelps, where did this cute little guy come from?
Horse killer Manny Phelps thought for a minute, then said he forgot. Picked him up somewhere though. Maybe it was Fresno.
I phoned a friend in the town of Lincoln. This is her kind of horse. He too was priced at 40 cents a pound, and horse killer Manny Phelps rounded him off at $250.00. Plus $110.00 shipping.
Our friend in Lincoln phones yesterday to say she is the happiest person on earth. The black and white colt spent the first day at his new home following her around like a puppy dog. When she climbed the back porch to go inside, he was right behind her. If she had said yes, the colt would have sat down at her kitchen table for Sunday supper.
I am old and slow and always losing the keys to my truck. But take it from me. I have seen this a thousand times. Feed lot horses are hardly shy about showing you how grateful they are.
Enjoy your Play Ball Monday, and be sure to hug your horses. Watch out for those Red Sox this year...
