Saturday, April 11th... 9 phone calls yesterday asking if Tbfriends can take horses. By 8:30 last night we were waiting for an even 10, but the call never came.
I only mention this because Tbfriends has access to over 60 thoroughbreds who need new places to live. The majority come from private homes. 11 horses are currently at a ranch in foreclosure. These horses are free, and you must accept sight unseen. There is a simple screening process, and Tbfriends provides transportation.
We honor privacy of others. No one wants an old owner demanding to know where their former horse is.
In one year, Tbfriends has placed 133 sight unseen horses into hew homes. 12 of those 133 have been returned. Not a good match.
Feed lots, auctions, internet, all packed with unwanted horses. Each horse with a story to tell.
Last summer horse killer Manny Phelps sorted things out for me. He said if you lump them all together, they become an uncomplicated blob. Take each horse individually, and there is a story.
I met Courtney and Maddie. Two sisters who last year raised $600.00 to rescue a feed lot thoroughbred. Until Thursday we only knew each other through e-mails. They brought me pictures of their gelding. Also a box of doughnuts from Raleys. When their feed lot gelding arrived at his new boarding stable, Courtney and Maddie researched his tattoo. Found out he was winless in 6 races. Found out he was raised at a puppy mill for horses in Vacaville. Found out he was given to horse killer Kevin Lewis, who resells his horses to slaughter in Mexico. It was Monday, and their gelding was scheduled for Mexico on Tuesday. Courtney and Maddie found out their gelding loves doughnuts. Carrots. Butterscotch candies. His first day under saddle, and he fell asleep.
And now Courtney and Maddie are getting ready for several small schooling shows. They do the 4-H thing. This summer a trail ride at Spooner Lake.
Their gelding loves long naps. Glazed doughnuts. A black barn cat named Max. He always nickers to Megan, the weekend stall cleaner. Perks up when country plays on the barn radio. Poops in the same spot in his stall.
Each horse with a story.
Courtney and Maddie both predict Allison will win American Idol. You heard it here first.
