Some ranches notch the horses ear as a way of identification, just like they do cattle. I know it is not very common now, but in the past it was.

Mo loves the snow! He was playing happily in the paddock this afternoon and it was a site to see. The vet checked him over and gave him a thumbs up. His bows have healed nicely and his left rear leg injury just barely shows up. The vet was flexing the poopy out of that leg (putting it in positions that were at extremes) and you could tell it bothered him, he did finally kick out-but not really at her, she said she asked for it...when he did it he looked at her as if to say ooops, sorry but that is enough now. We are fortunate that our vet has OTTBs of her own, so she is familiar with their special needs. He will get his teeth floated when the weather is warmer-they are not in dire shape, but need some work. The farrier will be out within a week and do his feet. Mo is busy charming everyone he meets, we are indeed once again so very lucky to have another special horse in our lives. Melissa is busy showing off for the new guy-she wants to make sure he understand that she is to be worshipped at all times. Hank is busy guarding Panik-he would prefer that she didn't look at Mo...selfish little poop. Salty and Freedom are both above the stir, they know what the imprtant things are...good food, treats, and scratchies. That is the news fro Grumpy Old Horse Ranch where not all the horses are old and no one is really grumpy

Well this morning found all the horses in fine shape. All of them were waiting for their grain. Panick nibbled at Dakota's hair (he had his mohawk spiked up) and Hank was giving kisses. Melissa was doing her hurry up and give me my treats dance, which is really cute. Stowie has figured out how to share Freedoms' mush with him, which is fine with Freedom who is nuzzling over the soaked hay pellets and keeping the good stuff for himself. Salty has decided that he is in love with Shaggie, Bella, Diva, Lyrical, and any other mare on the ranch-they are his ALL HIS regardless of what the other geldings think. Mo has decided that he loves being out in the paddock and that barns suck. He also enjoys all the attention that he gets. I was looking on other sites last night and realized that there are organizations that would have priced him out of being saved-a shame really. Mo was so fortunate that his welfare was in the hands of people who understand what rescue is and not out to make a buck off of who he is. Have a great day That is the news from Grumpy Old Horse Ranch where not all the horses are old and no one is really grumpy

Today was a sunny day at the ranch. Sunny days were Casino's favorite.....still hard not seeing him Freedom was up on the cement pad surveying the back half of the ranch. He keeps the cows and llamas in line. He is fat and sassy. Freedom has taken to shoving his soaked hay pellets over to Stowie, eating just his senior feed and ground wet cob-I thought at first it was just a fluke but he does it every time we feed him. Salty is getting his feet done this week, then he will be even more cool . This morning he did three laps around the big pen-bucking and kicking, showing off. Shaggie is throughly impressed-not. Hank and Panik are busy trying to see what everyone is up to. The grain bucket causes a big race and Panik is still kicking Hank's rear Poor Melissa, I was feeding her apple asses and she was being real good about taking them out of my hand this afternoon. Everything was going fine until I bumped the hot wire and shocked the poop out of both of us She took off while I was trying to get over the surprise-hopefully tomorrow she will forgive me and take treats again, this time we will stand in the middle of the pasture. Mo spent part of the day sunning himself while he got brushed and his tail combed. He was so relaxed that he was hanging out everywhere, I think he has been well trained to have his sheath cleaned because I was getting the-aren't you going to clean that to look Not what I had planned on doing today, but he needed cleaning so I hurried and got it done (hope people driving by couldn't see a thing) We worked on ground commands today-how to follow and stop without having the lead held onto. Mo is a fast learner and even did well at a trot today. We also worked on not crowding the human! He did well with that too (he has been pretty pushy in the paddock this week and that is not okay). Tomorrow if the weather is good I am going to saddle him up and see what he does. That is the news from Grumpy Old Horse Ranch, where not all the horses are old and Freedom is the only one who is grumpy.

Well today after some ground work I saddled up Mo As long as he was saddled I decided to take him for a ride. Mo is well broke but not well trained (duh). He doesn't neck rein, but will turn on a dime when you plow-rein him. He doesn't stand well to get on him, but is stone still while you get off. I didn't ride him for too long because I know that he is used to carrying less weight. Everything that he did today was typical of a OTTB, but he learns fast and will be a pleasure horse in no time. Here he is after we finished. he was pretty relaxed after his ride, it was probably good for him to be busy. The rest of the herd decided that today was the perfect day to find the muddiest spot they could and roll- Panik checking out the camera Hank getting ready for his close up The married couple Hank looks like he is expecting Majestic Panik Melissa has given herself a mud mask Wondering if she can eat the camera She must have rolled three times while I was there, I think she was hoping to blend in with the pasture and not get any ground work done Freedom busy keeping an eye on the cows-he loves them and the llamas. Salty doing what he does best Lokking cool and eating....good thing that Shaggie is there to remind him that 'he ain't all that' That is the news from Grumpy Old Horse Ranch where not all the horses are old and Freedom is the only one who is grumpy

Well the farrier is making her rounds at the ranch this week. Salty got his feet done yesterday and is walking much better. The minute his front toes get a bit long he starts to limp. She did a wonderful job rolling his toes for him, now there isn't a noticeable limp which means his knee is able to work better at the angle she has him. The rest get their feet done on Wednesday. It warmed up this morning so Mo is running around naked....the first thing he did was roll get up and shake and then roll again. He is a happy guy who has decided that outside is the place he likes best. I guess after years in a stall it would be nice to be free and be a horse. That is the news from Grumpy Old Horse Ranch, where not all the horses are old and Freedom is the only one who is grumpy (but even then he shares his mush with Stowie).

Thank you sooooo much for Stowie pictures! I've been looking for updates on him for a very long time. He looks great! Hope those knees are holding their own.
Love that new horse Mo. He's a tall one. So happy he ended up in your pasture rather on a dinner plate somewhere.
Now that I've found this thread, I'll keep looking for your horse updates here. These new sites have so many options that a lot of what I was tracking has gotten lost. It's probably there somewhere but I'll probably never find it.

The farrier was out to do more horses today, bless Shelly she meets the farrier in the middle of the day which I can't do. Hank and Panik decided that they would not be caught Hank even resorted to moving faster than a brisk walk Rumor has it he was running around with his tail straight up in the air! Shelly would get close, be petting them and the minute the rope tried to sneak around their neck...off they went, the poops. Melissa got her feet done and was a good girl. She didn't like her right rear being done, I think it has to do with whatever is going on in her back-the farrier mentioned it could be her hip-will have to get the vet to check her out. Freedom got his feet done. He tried to sit on the farrier when she did his hind feet Mo is now sporting fancy feet too. He was a very good boy for the whole thing. Salty watched the activities and is still sure that he looks cooler when he runs than Hank does That is the news from Grumpy Old Horse Ranch where not all the horses are old and Freedom is the only one who is grumpy

Today at the ranch the horses were all busy trying to be circus acts. Freedom was ripping around the pasture herding cows. He would move them to one end, make them turn and go the other way....he was having fun. Hank and Panik were racing around their section of the pasture seeing who could buck the biggest and fart the loudest. Salty and even Shaggie were racing around their paddock. Salty was harassing us while we cleaned the poop up...he kept following me when I was pushing the wheelbarrow shoving his nose in the middle of my back. Mo and Melissa both have new toys. Mo has a jollyball, he isn't too sure what to do with it. If you hand it to him he holds the handle in his mouth and chews on it a bit-he looks like he has a giant pacifier. Melissa has a giant apple that is scented. At first it sent her in to the Arab goofy snort and wave the head routine...then she started rolling it around. That is the news from Grumpy Old Horse Ranch where not all the horses are old and Freedom is the only one who is grumpy.
